| Pharoah Sanders |
Mari Boine
"Lapplands warmest voice" - as she usually
is called by the international specialised critics.
Mari Boine's music is a crafty mixture of Folk, Jazz
and Pop. Now all over the world known as a vocal acrobat,
she brings Norways contribution to the world music.
Pharoah Sanders
He is back again! The tenor sax giant from Little Rock,
former bandmember of the legendary John Coltrain Group,
seems to be forgotten after his burlesque excursions
into the disco scene till he got rediscovered by the
Hip Hop scene. Here Pharoah Sanders is one of the most
sampled Jazzartists and he fills the scene with enthusiasm
with his fantastic quartet.
Saterday may 25th 1996
Frank Köllges - Adam Noidt Franzendentale
Frank Köllges, drummer, conductor, componist, actor
and, most important, master of bigorchestral installations,
plans the biggest adventure, that the Festival has
ever seen. The enlarged stage for Köllges may
be too small by now.
Slide Ride
these are George Lewis, Ray Anderson, Gary Valente and
Craig Harris, short, the best, what the American Jazz
has to present on the trombone. International critic
reports from "breath-taking" to "fascinating"
about these musicians. Attention: only concert in Europe!!!
Tyrone Brown
Big Jazz musicians like Max Roach or Grover Whashington
take use of the arts of this innovative and exotic
bass-player. For many of his collegues Tyrone is the
"Paganini of Contrabass". Im Moers Brown
can be heard twice, in Jamaaladeen Tacuma's "Basso
Nouveau" and in a solo concert.
Cohan
This japanese leading Taiko-group plays exclusive in
Moers. Like no one else, they master these traditional
religious instruments - the size of these extreme big
drums , gave the organizer of the Moers Jazz Festival
big problems , the transport costs alone exeeded that
of a japanese middle class car. But for the 25th anniversary
all was done to make the project possible.
Maceo Parker
When Maceo Parker plays the Funk, his sax starts burning.
A lot of years he was only known as the "shadowman"
of the "Godfather of Soul" himself, James
Brown. He has released himself from this a long time
ago. Black feeling and real Soul with a touch of Gospel
could be heard out of Maceo's genious saxophone playing.
Sunday may 26th 1996
Craig Harris
For more than three years Craig Harris worked with
the "Arkestra" of the legendary Sun Ra and
together they even travelled into the orbit. After
Sun Ra returned back to his home planet Saturn on 31st
of May 1993, Craig Harris relauches his music with
his composition "The Jhetto plays the music of
Sun Ra". Craig Harris and his octet will play
modern interpretations of the music of the excentric
Sun Ra.
Ned Rothenberg
The highlight of the Brooklyn scene! For those who would
like to see this brilliant sextet (a double trio formed
of two saxophones, two electric-basses and two drum
sets) - come to the Festival.
Jamaaladeen Tacuma
He himself does not believe that he already is in the
"Hall of Fames" of modern bass players -
but his fans do. They would go hundreds of miles just
to see and hear him playing the bass. For his new band
"Basso Nouveau" he could get the three most
popular bassists of modern music in our time: Gerald
Veasley, Tyrone Browne and Warren Oree. This fantastic
quartet is been completed perfectly with the outstanding
drummer Webb Thomas.

Friedrich Hollaender played by Dirk Raulf "Illusions
"Johnny, wenn Du Geburtstag hast," sang by
Marlene Dietrich is one of the most famous songs written
by the composer Friedrich Hollaender (1896-1976), to
whom the cologne saxophone player Dirk Raulf memorised
his anniversary revue. Interpretations of the Hollaender
songs will be sung by no less than Dagmar Krause, who
is known best by Moers specialists from her former
performances with Fred Frith, Arto Lindsay, Chris Cutler,
John Zorn and many others.
Louis Sclavis
Totally imaginative folklore, that's what the quartet
of the french klarinetist Louis Sclavis is known for.
The quartet takes the american trombone-player Ray
Anderson as special guest with them on stage.
Jalal
The international critics celebrate Jalal Nurridin as
the "uncrowned Godfather of Rap". Already
in the sixties Rap music, which become a cult wordwilde
in the nineties, was a pure everyday business for the
leader of the legendary "Last Poets". With
his new formed band "Jalal", the inventor
of Rap, celebrates his premiere in Germany.
David Murray
David Murray says "Everybody in Moers will be astonished
about my new big band", "since one year we
play every monday live at the "Knitting Factory"
in New York." With star musicians like Fred Hopkins
or trombone heroes like Craig Harris or Gary Valente
at his side, David Murray presents a lot of highly
talented young musicians who never been heard in Europe
before. With this orchestra David Murray would like
to thank the Moers audience that has been loyal to
him during the last twenty years.
