Introduction to the exhibition about Noise
by Ragna Zeiss
The exhibition that will be located in De Balie will treat the phenomenon
of anti-noise or silence movements in the thirties of this century. In this
period many intellectuals in different countries complained about noise.
Noise was considered as anti-intellectual and a danger for civilisation.
The main focus at this exhibition will be on the role of these movements
within the Netherlands, but some attention will be paid to other countries
like Germany and the United States as well.
A story about the anti-noise
movements will be told partly with the help of posters and objects which
were showed on anti-noise exhibitions in the thirties as well and partly
with the help of for instance radio or television documentaries on these
movements.
