Nederlands Audiovisueel Archief (NAA)
Het Nederlands Audiovisueel Archief (NAA) is een cultuurhistorische instelling met de taak het audiovisuele erfgoed in Nederland te verzamelen, te beheren, te conserveren en ter beschikking te stellen aan een zo groot mogelijk aantal gebruikers. Het NAA beheert bijna 500.000 uur bewegend beeld en geluid (film, televisie, radio, oral history, muziek- en geluidsopnamen) en 20.000 objecten uit de geschiedenis van de media. De collectie geeft een verbluffend beeld van de geschiedenis van de media en van Nederland: vanaf 1898 tot de dag van vandaag.
Het NAA is in 1997 ontstaan uit een fusie van de archieven van de publieke omroep, het filmarchief van de RVD, Stichting Film en Wetenschap en het Omroepmuseum.

Het NAA is nu gevestigd op 7 locaties. Van de archieven in Hilversum en Rijswijk maken nu vooral programmamakers, studenten en wetenschappers gebruik. In het NAA Omroepmuseum wordt een deel van de collectie gepresenteerd aan het publiek. Over een paar jaar moet iedereen die zich wil verdiepen in de audiovisuele geschiedenis van Nederland of de geschiedenis van de media bij het NAA terecht kunnen. Dan opent het NAA een nieuw gebouw in Hilversum waar de archieven en een nieuw mediamuseum geïntegreerd zullen zijn ondergebracht. Ook de 160 medewerkers zullen dan op een plaats worden gehuisvest. Dit landelijk centrum voor audiovisuele cultuur en geschiedenis opent in 2003 zijn deuren. Gerekend wordt op minimaal 150.000 bezoekers per jaar.
Nu al biedt het gebruik van digitale technologieën de kans om de collecties toegankelijk te maken voor nieuwe gebruikers. Het NPS-Vanishing Sounds project is daar een goed voorbeeld van. In de toekomst zullen delen van de collectie steeds meer naar digitale formats worden overgezet. Dit biedt ongekende mogelijkheden voor de distributie van het materiaal voor professionele, educatieve en culturele doeleinden.
geluidenarchief
Het geluidenarchief, waarvan nu een deel online beschikbaar is in het kader van het NPS-Vanishing Sounds project, is ondergebracht bij de fonotheek van het NAA. Het archief bevat ruim 27.000 geluiden, op band en op cd. Een gedeelte bestaat uit eigen opnamen van de omroepen, een ander gedeelte is afkomstig van in geluidseffecten gespecialiseerde maatschappijen. Net als de andere collecties van het NAA, is het geluidenarchief ontsloten in een geautomatiseerde database.

Netherlands Audiovisual Archive (NAA)
The Netherlands Audiovisual Archive (NAA) is an organisation in the area of cultural history. Its responsibilities cover the acquisition, collection, preservation and presentation of the national audiovisual heritage. It seeks to open up its collections for as many users as possible. NAA' s collections now contain more than 500.000 hours of moving image and recorded sound materials (film, television and radio broadcasts, oral history and music and sound recordings) and 20.000 media related objects. The collection gives an impressive overview of the respective histories of the Dutch media and the Netherlands. From 1898 to the present.
The NAA has been established in 1997 out of a merger of the radio and television archives of the Dutch public broadcasting organisations; the Audiovisual Archive of the Netherlands Government Information Service; the Film and Science Foundation and the Broadcast Museum.

The NAA is currently based at seven different locations. Presently, extensive use is made of the archives in Hilversum and Rijswijk, particularly by programme makers, students and researchers. In the NAA Broadcast Museum a part of the collection is on public display . In a few years time, everybody who wishes to learn something about the audiovisual history of the Netherlands or that of the media should be able to consult the NAA. Then the NAA will be opening its brand new headquarters in Hilversum which will house not only the archives themselves but also an integral and fully fledged media museum. This building will also provide workspace for one hundred and sixty employees of the NAA. This national centre for audiovisual culture will open its doors in the year 2003. An estimated 150,000 visitors per year are expected.
Applied digital technologies are already providing fresh opportunities in allowing new users to access the collections. The NPS-Vanishing Sounds project is a prime example of this. In future, more and more parts of the collections will be transferred to digital formats. This process will open up new channels of distribution for this wealth of material, benefiting professional, educational and cultural objectives.
sound archive
The sound archive, a section of which is available on-line as part of the NPS-Vanishing Sounds project, is housed in the record and tape library of the NAA. The sound archive contains well over 27,000 sounds, both on audio tape and compact disc. One section consists of recordings made by the broadcasters themselves, and another section comes from companies who specialize in the production of sound effects. Like the other NAA collections, the sound archive is fully catalogued within a digital database.
