Soundscapes Lecture

Noise & Work

In their lecture-performance Susanne Bohner (physician for occupational medicine), Helmut Eisel (musician) and Jeroen van Westen (artist) will present the project ‘Klangschaft über Grenzen’. The scenery of this project (1997) was a landscape of huge sound objects in a factory hall in the south of Germany. Local companies built these sound objects out of materials which were and are fundamental in the industry of the region: stone, wood, iron and water. The actors were workers, who do their day

after day work in noisy areas, often dealing with the materials, which now were present as ‘instruments’. Working and playing with these instruments revealed the impact of working noise as well as the aesthetics of isolated sounds.
