Soundscapes Lecture
Illusions
Kees Schoonenberg, journalist and conjuror, will talk about the way in
which the magician creates his illusions. He will show a number of
conjuring tricks and tell something about the history of the magic
art. He claims that every profession needs a bit of magic, humbug he
calls it. The doctor needs his white coat and his instruments to
impress us, the notary his solemn language, the general his uniform
and distinctions, the artist the holy environment of concert hall or
museum. "The real pillars of society" claims Schoonenberg, "are those
who have refrained from learning a profession in order to concentrate
on the perfection of a humbug". He calls the magicians artists who
turned false pretence into an art. He will try to show how the
magicians creates his illusions, without breaking the oath of secrecy
to which a magician is naturally bound. So it's about perception, but
what you see or hear is not what really happens. Nevertheless is the
magician the only artis that's honest. He claims that he will deceive
you and so he does.
