Soundscapes Exhibition
About Vedute
44 x 3 2 x 7cm (in closed form): visual statements relating to space.
Currently Vedute presents and manages 150 extremely diverse 3D
manuscripts, created by architects, artists, designers and composers.
These are exhibited at Vedute's presentation space at Tussen de Bogen
42 in Amsterdam. Open: Friday and Saturday 14.00-17.00 pm or by
appointment. Vedute regularly presents its collection at travelling
exhibitions during the year.
Acoustic Architecture - Architectural Acoustics
Guest-curator and thematic projects play a keyrole in the build-up of the
Vedute collection of 3D-manuscripts. The sub-collections that come out of
this throw a different light on the already exciting collection and bring to
light previously unrecognized associations. In collaboration with
guestcurator Frans Bevers (director of OPERA 3D-Design and lecturer at the
Rietveld Academie) a number of artists from different fields were invited to
visualize their ideas on the relationship between sound and space in the form
of a 3D-manuscript. The result of this initiative may be viewed at in the
Exhibition space the VEEMVLOER from November 19 until December 12 as
part of Soundscapes (be)for(e) 2000 Festival. The work of the following
participants will be exhibited:
Erik Blits (architect/Amsterdam), Bernard Delage (architect/Paris), Cilia
Erens (soundwalker/Amsterdam), Joost Grootens (architectural & multimedia
designer/Amsteram), Jan Hoogstad (architect/The Hague), Toine Horvers
(artist/Rotterdfam), Hans Muller (artist/Amsterdam), Bruce Odland
(composer/New York), Paul Panhuysen (artist/Eindhoven), Lee Ranaldo
(composer/artist/New York), Remko Schaa (artist/Amsterdam), Moniek
Toebosch (artist/Amsterdam), George Tsypin (architect/New York), Matthijs
Vos (composer/Amsterdam) Jean van Wijk (artist/The Hague)
and Jian Ren Zhao (artist/China/Amsterdam).
Each manuscript evokes a mesmerizing and evocative world of sound and
space. How may sound transform space and what happens to space when
devoid of sound? The ears and eyes themselves are turned into a musical
instrument as the viewer exchanges his sense of space for his sense of
sound.
According to the current schedule the year 2000 should bring further
presentations to New York, Eindhoven, Antwerp and London.
Vedute Salons
The Sunday Salon-afternoon have become a regular event at Vedute and take
place six times a year. They revolve around discussions in which the
(renewed) acquaintance of the 3D-manuscript collection is its main focus.
Guest-speakers are challenged to elaborate on their perception of (a part of)
the collection from diverse point of views and exchange ideas with those
present. Different ways of thinking (and seeing) introduce new insights; ideas
generate more ideas and associations inevitably lead to more and new
associations: a mental perpetuum mobile. On the occasion of the
presentation of the 'Acoustic Architecture - Architectural Acoustics'
sub-collection the artist and composer Dick Raaijmakers will fill in a
Salon on November 21.

The Vedute Foundation
The Vedute Foundation was set up in 1991 with the aim of establishing a collection of 3D manuscripts: three-dimensional objects - not unlike books - which make the concept of space, in its broadest sense, accessible as visualized, materialized thoughts.
Vedute invites carefully chosen artists (visual artists, designers, architects, composers and people active in other or multiple disciplines) to make a 3D manuscript. They are asked to depict their personal ideas on space in a three-dimensional work that, in closed form, measures 44x32x7 cm. Some 3D manuscripts are immediately accessible, while others only reveal themselves literally stage by stage: the variety of possibilities is inexhaustible. Vedute's only conditions are 1. The work must refer to the concept of space in some way. 2. The specified dimensions must be adhered to.
In bringing together and disseminating these works Vedute seeks to bring new stimulus to thinking and the debate about space and architecture.
Within the framework of theme-projects, sub-collections have been created such as 'A City Library of the Senses' (1995), 'The Written versus the Constructed' (1997), 'Colour & Space' (1998), '00:00 Time and Duality (1999/2000) and 'Acoustic Architecture-Architectural Acoustics' (1999/2000).
The Charlotte Köhler Prize for Architecture (1993) and the Amsterdam Art Foundation's Architecture Incentive Prize (1995) have made possible a permanent display of the steadily growing collection. Vedute now presents and administers 150 extremely diverse and unique 3D manuscripts.
Since November 1997 the collection has been on display in Vedute's presentation space at Tussen de Bogen 42 in Amsterdam. In addition (new) sections of the collection are regularly showcased at touring presentations, and Vedute also uses various other means to extend the scope of its activities. The Vedute Bulletin that appears twice a year, the Cahiers devoted to theme-projects and regular salons provide a platform for lively debate between participants and interested parties.
Vedute's formula has proven effective. It appeals alike to young and old, unknown and distinguished talent, who join in the perennially changing debate on space. Thus Vedute fulfils its aim: to stimulate and inspire new ways of seeing and working.
The members of the board of Vedute are responsible for the contents of the artistic program, devised in collaboration with the board of advisors. The members of the board carry out the program's implementation on a voluntary basis and are assisted by many volunteers.
Members of the board: Gitta Luiten (chair), Jacobina Brinkman (treasurer), Suzanne Styhler (secretary), Madeleine van Lennep, and Mirjam IJsseling
Board of advisors: Frans Bevers, Rob Bloem, Jetteke Bolten-Rempt, Christian Bouma, Peter de Rijk, Maarten Kloos, Paul Mertz, and Luce van Rooy
Project assistants: Astrid van Baalen and Hester Aardse
The activities of Vedute are supported by:
Stimuleringsfonds voor Architectuur, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Mondriaan Stichting and Friends of Vedute.
